Re: moon partial eclipse tonight

I got up to see it at about 6.30am but the moon had set behind the escarpment so I missed out

Re: moon partial eclipse tonight

Fantastic photos - it was too cloudy here to see anything - so thank you for showing those.

Re: moon partial eclipse tonight

Some great photos of the moon, especially like Warleyron’s showing so much detail.

Re: moon partial eclipse tonight

Not the greatest shot of last night's lunar eclipse but the best my Canon compact camera on 20x zoom would do. The Moon was quite bright though and the photo is pretty much what the eye saw. I've cropped the photo and removed some chromatic aberration (red fringing) using Paintshop Pro.

I thought the red was supposed to be there? Isn't it the sun's rays being refracted by the earth's atmosphere at the red end of the spectrum thus being the only light to reach the surface under the shadow?

In all the lunar eclipses I have seen the moon is a ghostly (pale) red in the shadow.

Re: moon partial eclipse tonight

It wasn't a natural red tinge but a result of the lens and the high zoom factor I think. If you look at the other shots there isn't any red (perhaps just a little there in the first photo shown by realspeed).

The fringing removed is that sharp red fringe on the left ..although I suppose I could have left it there by the time the image was cropped and reduced in pixel size.
