Think you were lied to so did some googling and found you where.

Most gas companies will replace a meter for free.
the most charge by the ones that do was around £70.

I had a similar repair delay with BT went on to facebook and outlined my problem said what a bunch of incompetent waste of space they and their service was.

Result repair attended to the following day. They hate bad publicity so give then some grief. It worked for me.
