In a statement, the airline said: "The latest cuts follow the spread of the coronavirus into Europe and North America over the past fortnight, as well as its continued spread through Asia."

As part of the cutbacks Qantas will:

  • Ground 38 aircraft, including eight A-380s
  • Re-route services to London, flying via Perth instead of Singapore
  • Ask staff to take annual leave and unpaid leave

Miniature Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said while redundancies were a last resort, the changes meant about 2,000 jobs were now surplus to requirements.

Re: Stock markets tanked

Imo stock markets are like the tide?
They go up, and they go down?
This is intentional and was designed into them!
The reason being to allow cerain individuals to reap rewards on a
regular basis by selling high and buying low, the present situation
is the perfect opportunity to enter the share market at the low
point and ride he wave to the high point and then cash in?
the simple action of buying and selling initiates the next cycle
of rise and fall! It will be a long time before there is another
opportunity like this one?

Unless the companies you buy go down. That is likely the way things are going.

Flight Centre will close 100 stores across Australia in response to the coronavirus.

In a statement to the Australian Securities Exchange, the travel company said the "virus's spread and increased travel restrictions mean demand is softening significantly and [the] timeframe for recovery is unclear".

The number of job losses is unclear.

And the exchange rates aren't doing so bad either. £1 = US$1.31 = €1.12 this morning on Sky News.
