Security lighting comes either with LED bulbs or floodlights with PIR sensors on either type. LED lights are cheaper to run and just as powerful I have used both and the LED ones are preferable. If using for a back garden they should not shine beyond your boundary border as it can then be an offence of being a public nuisance.

Google " led security lights with sensors"

I have these lantern types with sensors on my garage pillars which give out a decent light

Think I'll speak to the electrician again.
It was the local police who suggested the dusk/dawn lights as good ones.
Thanks for the input folks. I shall have to give this more thought.
