Electrical socket plates

Does this job really need an electrician, or is it within the capability of a sensible DIYer?

I asked this question in Chit Chat, but thought it better to enquire here also.

In the bedroom I have two double socket plates, a blanking plate, and one for the tv aerial. All looking grubby and grey, and I thought how nice it would be to fit sparkling white new ones.

I can rewire a plug, and have done so several times in the past.

Thanks.

If you are asking the question, you need to get an electrician to do it, I'm afraid.

The powers that be will tell us that we are all to thick to change a socket. If you can flick a switch and tighten a few screws then you are capable. The secret is of course not to tell anyone.

I believe that any "competent person " is allowed to carry out this work, so as long as you believe yourself to be competent then it is not a difficult thing to do. JUST TURN THE BLOODY POWER OFF FIRST.....

Thank you Barry, and LD. Just been looking at videos and demos.

Yes, I do know to switch power off, that's why I put 'sensible DIYer'!

Purwell, c'mon...I'm not stupid!!

Janet if am doing anything unfamiliar with wires (or dismantling something complicated) I make a little sketch noting colours and where they go and also note the order in which bits come off .

Re: Electrical socket plates

It will help if when you buy the new sockets, you can get some with the terminals in the same place as it will help re-wiring. Electricians are known for not leaving any 'play' on cables to save a few pence.

That is very unlikely, they change them all the while, modern regulations say they should have RCD's on them now.
