Coffee grains as fertiliser?

Someone I work with suggested this. Before I empty my espresso pot on the tomatoes I was wondering if any of the Monty Dons on the forum have successfully tried and tested this method....

I put them in my compost bin. Never tried direct application.

Funny, my mum used to say the same about old tea, tea leaves or tea bags and I'd often spot a typhoo in a pot plant.

Didn't seem to kill them. Dunno if they liked it.

I put them in the compost.

When I go to Waitrose there is a 'help yourself' bin outside with coffee grains, bags and a scoop but I haven't taken any.

I agree with Rehab and Orangutan too - compost them.

I believe this subject came up a while back, if I can find the thread I will show you Annie.

I have always put them in the compost myself but this colleague said that plants do well if you just stick them right on. I was surprised to say the least. Could just imagine caffeine charged tomatoes!

I found an interesting link on the subject. Apparently just like most things in life they are good in moderation. So sprinkling a little can help but its not safe for pets that like to explore.

I wonder if the large amount of nitrogen they produce has they compost down will just lead to a glut of very large green leaves at the expense of the fruit?
