Does Anyone Remember....

The lovely sooooo lean rashers of Shoulder or Collar Bacon as it was then known, from the bacon counter at Littlewoods stores when they sold food. I always remember mum buying it for our breakfast treat at weekends. The rashers were so lean and tasty, not quite gammon as that was expensive, but honestly, the next best thing. I really miss being able to buy that locally.I had such a yearning to taste it again I bought 4 packets of Gloucester Old Spot Collar bacon rashers online from Kimbers Farm Shop. I have 3 in the freezer and we enjoyed the 4th packet for breakfast at the weekend. It was absolutely delicious, just as I remembered, £4.19 a packet but well worth it. Only problem is that the delivery charge was over £7 so doubt will be ordering it too often.

The problem is that no local butcher sells Collar bacon. Coller joints yes, but I have no means to slice it. If I try doing it with a sharp knife I would probably end up cutting one or two fingers off. The butchers won't slice a collar joint into rashers either, I know, I've phoned a few of them and they have all said no.
(mean devils).

Does anyone else remember this lovely lean bacon rasher? and why won't local butchers sell it to the public?

Lucky you EZR, They are large wide slices of pure lean thinly cut rashers of bacon. Pretty much the same shape as a gammon slice but much cheaper.

I don't really like the bacon on sale now, It's far too salty and fatty. with lots of that yuccy white stuff. Don't like bacon fat So we usually end up with just the medallions, and to be honest, could take it or leave it. BRING BACK THOSE COLLAR RASHERS. Just one was enough to replace two whole rashers of bacon sold nowadays.

I can (and do) that kind of bacon (see photo) here in Brighton. This cafe is not that far from the Hospital and I go there for my breakfast every thursday.

Re: Does Anyone Remember....

Don't mind me asking Joe, but isn't that back bacon? It looks nice but it doesn't look like collar bacon. Collar bacon is a largish wide rasher, exactly like a gammon steak but obviously a bit smaller and thinner. with a little marbling.

By the way. that certainly looks a substantial English breakfast, I don't think I would be able to eat a quarter of that plate of food myself but can understand why you must thoroughly enjoy your visit every time.

I thought the same SG, I remember collar bacon being more than twice that size.

Found these online. not a very good photo but that's how I remember them looking on the trays in Littlewoods. Lovely and lean and no fat. just a little marbling.

It'll taste even better matey, laid on some suet pastry with a sliced onion on top and then sprinkled with Paxo's Sage & onion and Parsley & Thyme stuffing mix, rolled into a sausage shape, wrapped in foil and placed in a steamer for a couple of hours. Served with appropriate vegetables and mashed potato and smothered in thick, rich gravy.

Well Done Omah, and thank you. I should have remembered that photo when I ordered the Collar Bacon from Kimbers Farm Shop!.
The bacon that arrived was identical to that in the photo. (still got some in the freezer as only need one slice per serving).

Maybe we should all insist our Butchers that we want this bacon, then perhaps it would not necessitate having to order it from specialist farm shops!!. I can't emphasise enough how nice this bacon is compared to all the other cuts of bacon.(especially for someone like moi that cuts every bit of fat off rashers before cooking them and cannot bear salty bacon).
