Two 17-year-old boys who kicked a fawn to death in a 'barbaric attack' escaped jail yesterday.
The female roe deer died after being karate-chopped in the head,
dropped three feet and then repeatedly kicked as it lay on the ground. A post-mortem examination found it had suffered several skull fractures, a severed spine and a broken right leg.
Defenceless: The deer the teens bashed and kicked to death was similar in size to this fawn
During
their trial, the boys, from Poole, Dorset, claimed that the
six-week-old deer had already broken its leg and that they were simply
putting it out of its misery. But Keith Arthurs, 52, who witnessed the attack as he walked
his dog in Upton Country Park, told Poole Youth Court how the boys had
been 'joking and laughing' during the attack. Yesterday, the pair - who can not be named for legal reasons --were found guilty of intentionally killing a wild animal.
A third boy aged 16 was acquitted.
But despite being told that it was likely the animal had '
suffered greatly', a judge said he would not bow to 'public abhorrence'
and jail the boys. District judge Roger House said: 'Although everybody is up in
arms, very upset, angry, there is an emphasis now on avoiding
imprisonment for youths. 'Neither has a criminal background. It was nasty and never should have happened. But it won't be imprisonment.'
The boys will be sentenced later this month.
name & shame the boys better still tie them up andsee how they like being kicked
