Re: Empty Shops in Town Centres

A good example of greed yesterday. We went to the Malvern flower show and saw our small patio table & chairs we bought last month. Price online £60, price at the show £120.

Hi

Years ago we had Living over the Shop.

A Town Centre Initiative to use empty storage space to provide housing and just as importantly surveillance.

A 75% Grant to owners.

It worked.

It was scrapped.

Re: Empty Shops in Town Centres

It’s a case of use it or loose it .
All around I see shops being torn down and apartments for the over 50+ going up .
It’s the end of the High St as we once knew it.

The fact is that Commercial Shop Property owners charge very high rents, and Shop owners are unable to meet these high rents, which often increase every few years
Much of the property in Town Centres is owned by Local Councils and The Chuch of England too.
They would rather put people out of business than reduce the rent.

Why can't they be Rent Controlled like Rented accommodation?

Britain is no longer a 'Nation of Shopkeepers' as Napoleon once said.
I can't understand this - in far off days when I rented, one of the cheapest places to rent was a main road shop in a shopping strip with accommodation. It was much cheaper than the same size of accommodation in a nearby house and you got a several year lease with an option to renew.

Places just a few kms from the City CBD were ridiculously cheap I rented shops in King St, Newtown (before it became trendy) for many years.

Re: Empty Shops in Town Centres

Hi Ripple
You are right
The high street is no more .
The shops in them tend to be expensive or twee usually both .
They also have to be in order to pay ( as Azure mentioned) the rediculous rents charged .
Why would one shop in the high st ,paying parking ,when you can do it all at the supermarket ?
Unless you live in walking distance of the high street of course and don't have a car .
Maybe they think all those over 50s will do this .
However seeing as people have to work until their late sixties now I doubt they will be strolling down to the shops at their leisure buying overpriced stuff .

If I drive the 10 miles to Worcester using petrol, I then have to pay high car parking fees around £5 for a couple of hours that is if I can find a space. It is cheaper to buy online and pay postage of around £3 or nothing if I am lucky and free returns.
Just what I was thinking.
Greed on Rent.
Greed on Rates.
Greed on Parking.

Re: Empty Shops in Town Centres

I believe there is another reason as well as those already mentioned. At one time if you wanted something that was not in stock - they would order it for you. Not so now - because a lot of the shops do not compile their own orders - they just accept whatever is delivered.
