Incarcerated criminals should pay incarceration costs

It is ludicrous that most English undergrads have to pay big bucks for what in most cases is a poor education in our universities and yet crims pay zilch for being provided with accomadation, food, and more.

IMO prisoners should be charged for at least some if not all of their incarceration costs to be repayable on release.

Perhaps by a garnishing of their wages, maybe by having a special tax code, or a surcharge on any "benefits" they get on release.

Apart from being right and proper it would be at least some reduction on the stupidly high costs that we tax payers have to fund.

Why not?

Sounds good in theory - not sure how/if it would work in practice.

For those in work, by tax code. For those not in work, surcharge on their benefits.

Sorted.

Or just reduce the benefits?
Do they actually get benefits whilst in jail?

I'm thinking when they've been released.

All benefits are stopped while in jail. Consider the costs of incarceration payment by society to stop them committing crimes. During the fime they are locked up they are supposed to see the wrong of their previous ways, and decide not to commit crimes any more. If you believe in fairy tales you can leave it at that.
Reality is that after being released many of them return to their old ways. Harder punishment doesn't prevent crime, as has been scientifically proven all over the world. The best preventive measure to me seems removing these elements from society. Since capital punishment has been abolished, what remains is the old method of shipping them of to uninhabited shores. If you should have some unused islands that would fit that bil?. The melvinas might be suitable candidates?

I think its disgusting that us the tax payer has to pay to keep prisoners in prison.

I think for serial killers and repeat violent offenders they should bring back capital punishment as they aren't obviously bothered about other human life.

I think they should make petty criminals have to do hard labour for their keep whilst in there.

Take away phones, televisions, pool/snooker tables etc Why should they get privileges when they choose to break the law.

All these ruddy do gooders make me sick saying prisoner have human rights, when someone takes a life more than once, in my mind, they should lose all human rights.

Re: Incarcerated criminals should pay incarceration costs

Not as in Labour Party!
But as in leg irons and chain gangs!
We would then have at our disposal large numbers of
able bodied labourers!
Which we could use to fill gaps in the economy, such as
seasonal work on farms or building new roads or airfield
runways etc, anything heavy or dirty or dangerous that is
carried out presently by law abiding citizens!
These teams or gangs to be supervised by the existing
prison staff, augmented by any citizens that were displaced
by the prisoners! They could still be accomodated in their
current premises!
There should be no human rights issues as they will only be
doing what law abiding citizens are presently doing for a
living!

Why not?
Because, no matter the merits or otherwise, it is an unworkable idea.
Impose higher tax? Then work becomes at best unappealing, at worst, economically non viable.
Reduce benefits? There is a threshold minimum.
Make them work for nothing? That takes away paid employment from others.
