Claire darlin' I think you might find that the black spot is actually 'Macular degeneration'. My Father was almost blind with this disease.
I hope it is not AMD Uncle Joe and I think it is likely the opthalmologist would have been aware of the possibility when he did his examination and looked for it. From what I understand AMD usually starts in the centre of the retina rather than the bottom.

, but I think either or both would have said something if they thought this was might be the issue. They both said..."don't know" as they didn't see any reason. I've had issues that the sinus on that side for quite sometiime and thinking maybe it could be related, I'm made an appointment with my GP for Monday. But... my doctor has a '1 issue per appointment' rule and I have two complaints. I'm going to voice both and I wonder which she will consider to answer.

You know I used to have such faith in doctors but now its zilch, the specialist would have seen it right away Claire,it might be one of those bits of rubbish that come and go when you get older, dont worry about it.I went to the Docs yesterday with my eyes as they were so painful and I sat with them closed most of the time, any way it was just Dry eye and I have eye drops, much better, I was thinking oh God annie you cant go blind as well as deaf, have to take the rope to the tree.

Re: Lets talk about the eye shall we. . .

I had no faith in an outlet called Specsavers over here as they totally got my prescription wrong. I knew it, and told them, but they didn't listen.

That was about six years ago but on Friday last I went to have an eye test with a new optician. I took my old glasses with me (bi-focals), which I hadn't used for about four years because, against all odds, my eyesight totally cleared and I couldn't wear them.

However, this past winter driving home on dark nights, I realised that I did need distance glasses, hence the visit on Friday, although driving in daylight is no problem at all. My new optician couldn't understand why I'd been given bi-focals in the first place, but said that the deterioration in my eyes was because they'd become dry following the stroke I had last April, plus the fact that I had early stage cataracts to both eyes. I need do nothing about this yet, but he said that my new prescription was nothing like as strong as my old one.

Because I use a computer for several hours a day at work, and at home of course, he did recommend that I have glasses for "VDU use" so I approached my boss yesterday and he's going to pay for those. Thing is, I can see the monitor very clearly, except for the tiniest font of 8 which I sometimes have to use. Other than that, I don't need glasses to read.

I'm so glad I went now.

Hi Mollie, I got my new glasses from our Local Asda about 2 months. Bi-Focals which I have been using for years.....The lady Optician also gave me another pair JUST FOR THE COMPUTER.

Yes James. My boss recommended Asda for my new distance glassses as they were fairly cheap but, quite honestly, it's a drag for me to go to Asda because (1) I hate the place, and (2) I hate the place!

The ones I have on order are £50. My new optician did not recommend bi-focals for me because I don't need them for reading (a book, newspaper etc) and, when using a monitor wearing bi-focals, your neck is at a bad angle to read the screen, which can cause pain in the neck and in the back.

I just heard something on the news yesterday that said there is promising signs that a drug used to treat cancer is having a positive effect on treating macular degeneration. Wouldn't that be helpful for a lot of people with this problem!

Re: Lets talk about the eye shall we. . .

Was called to Optician last Thursday (been more than 2 years since last examination) there is a very slight age related degeneration in my sight and I need a new pair of glasses - going to cost me £50.00 - I now have THREE pair!!! - but will give one back to be sent abroad somewhere for others to use.

Re: Lets talk about the eye shall we. . .

Unfortunately, with most of us using a VDU these days, the electric light we use in our homes can actually cause eye damage from over-use. It's to do with the amount of hertz emitted flickering from the monitor - which you can't actually detect - but it is picked up, nevertheless.

In the workplace, special lighting should be installed, which combats and negates this problem, but of course we don't get this special (expensive) lighting in our homes.

If you do have to spend a lot of time using a VDU, the monitor shouldn't be stared at for any great length of time. I've no choice at work, but I do admit to spending time on the computer in the evening,
