Very Nasty Scams!

I've been helping a couple of PC users to sort out some very nasty scams over the last couple of days.

Apparently these are happening in very large numbers and causing upsets and financial losses all over the place.

So, hopefully, you won't mind my putting a warning on here.

Scam one consists of an email coming in which is supposedly coming in using your own email address & Password.

The sender says he has tapped into your account and is now in control of it.

There were 5 incidents. of this, in one day at a Company nearby.

The scammer says he has all of your contacts and has videos of your watching on line porn He wants paying in Bitcoin otherwise he will send his videos to all of your contacts.

The is probably a lie but it reminds us to check out our email addresses and passwords. We should all be using duplex identity, these days, such that any site from which you buy stuff will need to send you a confirmation to prove it's you.

Needless to say, if he really has your log on and password he can take control.

The other scam is a fake mail from HMRC, or the DVLI , where a spammer says there is a problem with your tax/driving licence and they need to confirm your data!

If you see any of these, I suggest you search the web (using the first line of the bad email) to see what to do. Or, come back here for advice.

All of my banks and my Amazon account send me an OTP (One Time Password) to my mobile to verify any transaction. A good idea IMO.

Thanks Ted, I think one poster here has already had a scam from HMRC.
I always get a OTC from my bank when I make a direct transaction.

Re: Very Nasty Scams!

Hard to believe people fall for this stuff.

These things are all essentially the same. Just don't touch such emails. Delete. Job done.

And of course, put a sticker over the webcam on your laptop. It CAN be used by various websites without you knowing. If you have Adobe Flash installed (and most do) then the settings for it by default give permission to 3rd party sites to use your webcam. Change those settings imo but the fail safe is just to put a sticker over the webcam.

I've covered up my laptops camera too. One can never be careful enough. Though, in theory, a green light should appear when the camera is in operation, I bet there's a way around that.

Obviously a lie, surely, if you don't watch on line porn?

Re: Very Nasty Scams!

my desktop doesn't have a camera so they would be magicians if they could watch me. Even my Skype camera is rarely if ever attached.
Why watch porn when there is enough action at home? yes you all know what you get up to.
