Friar's balsam is a kind of antiseptic, good for cuts etc...

It is also good for colds, catarrh, bronchitis and suchlike.

Not sure what it would do if you used it as a face pack though

oh, whoops maybe i've become confused, it used to be in a brown box, maybe that's what they used to put in a bowl of hot water with a towel over their head to clear the nose or something, the face pack stuff looked like mud

Yes, inhaling it in a bowl of hot water is one of its commonest uses.

You've now got me wondering what the muddy looking face pack was!!!

I still use Friars Balsham when I am really congested - history of sinus problems. As a child always seemed to be stuck over a bowl of it with a towel over my head.
