the coast of the isle of white was in sight of the ship??
I infer from that, that the rest of voyage was peaceful and calm up
to that point? As no radio messages were recieved untill then?
So what can we deduce from that?
Why is this so!

Probably because the ship was loaded with crude oil and so the unwanted passengers were visually indistinguishable and the horrible overwhelming stink of crude ruled out any other abnormal pong being noticed.

The only thing that earns Nigerian crude the definition "sweet" is the low levels of sulphur it contains.

Re: Tanker

Not directly related to this particular event, but has it ever occurred to anyone why illegal immigrants like this don't take the opportunity to make their way to places like Russia, China or North Korea?
Is it, perhaps:
- not so many generous handouts, or maybe
- shot dead upon arrival?

Hi

We are our own worst Enemies.

International Law is on our side.

We choose not to use it.

Illegals on a ship?

Off to Quarantine Buoy.

No landing at all, been there, done that.

It costs the shipowner a fortune.

It works.

It doesn't. Once within UK waters they have entered the UK.

You're, probably, an expert in oil, but you might not have noted that crude oil has a dangerously low flashpoint, and, as a result, any smell present, whilst at sea, would suggest an oil leak, any oil leak would be explosive in the event of lightning, or whatever.

In the event, this is what a newspaper suggests might happen to the Pirates:-

"What’s the law on hijacking and piracy?

The seven were arrested under Section 9 of the Aviation and Maritime Security Act 1990, which deals with hijackings. The law states: ‘A person who unlawfully, by the use of force or by threats of any kind, seizes a ship or exercises control of it, commits the offence of hijacking a ship.’

Richard Neylon, an expert in maritime law from law firm HFW, said: ‘If you try to seize control of a vessel and you have no business being aboard that vessel, the threshold is quite low under this legislation.’ The maximum sentence under the legislation is life imprisonment."

1) It sounds, from various news items, that we are about to use the available laws.

2) I just hope that terrorists will not spot the possibilities!

Re: Tanker

The root problem seems to be that everyone on the take wants to come here, to the UK, in preference to any other place.

There must be a reasonable explanation for that.
