Maybe thats part of the problem? Particularly with regard to your
fire prevention laws which ae you say go back decades!
Things have changed world wide, have you changed with them?
Anyway good luck to you all, looks like a good few of you will need

You must read more carefully, I didn't say the laws go back decades I said the policy has been developed over decades. The Americans come to us for advice not the other way round though there is a constant exchange of information. You can be sure that we are up to date on the latest wild fire fighting techniques.

The difficulty now is that the northern hemisphere's and our fire season now overlap and previously we shared the same large planes and helicopters so they were used all year round but this is becoming problematical.

BTW “Lighting a fire on a day of total fire ban attracts an on the spot fine of $2200,” according to the NSW Rural Fire Service.

If the matter goes to court, you could face a fine of up to $5500 or 12 months behind bars.

But if the lit fire escapes and results in death, damages or destroys property and/or the environment, fines can reach up to $132,000 along with a jail sentence of up to 14 years.

Thanks for all the info and sitreps Brucy, l find them very interesting
and informative. Your regulations seem to be harsh enough, but l
think your infrastructure and strategies probably need modifying
to keep up with climate change which is happening much faster
than anybody anticipated?
Good luck and happy new year!

I think that was a media construction, some said 40 cigarettes a day - pick a number.

This is a more considered article on the pollution due to the bushfires:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-12-...ained/11781132

...and the NSW Health has a FAQ page about Bushfire smoke

Despite roughly 1400 miles this is the effect of the fires in New Zealand.
Not a cloud in the sky today but....

Brucy, my heart goes out to you. My son and his family all live in Gippsland but for the moment safe. Perhaps now the deniers will stop denying.
