Travelling as a single

As someone that likes to travel but due to circumstances have to go alone, was wondering if anyone has any useful tips ie. where to go, which companies etc. looked at Saga cruises but as a single they are just so expensive. I like the nice weather so abroad is the only option. Thankyou

If I have to name just one city that made the biggest impression on me it would be Venice for sure. Such a beautiful city. If you go, a must is a trip on a Gondola. The one draw back are the crowds of people always.

Malta, if you haven't been is also good for single travellers. Easy to get around. I have been twice on my own. Lots of hol offers on. Saga do several hotels where you will meet like minded folk. Also a lady on this site very kindly gave me a Hotel name that she recommended. May try it next year.

How about Budapest? It's an absolutely beautiful city with loads of places of interest to visit. In summer the temperature ranges from 27 to 35C and if you want to cool down you can take a day cruise on the Danube. No problems with the language as most people speak English. For me though one of the most important considerations is that it's a safe city for women on their own ... but that's true for the whole of Hungary.

Re: Travelling as a single

Hello Ventura!
I have done several cruises as a solo and also could not afford Saga so went with Thompsons and First Choice. I found that everyone was very friendly, singles and couples. For me I found that the smaller boats were better as you tended to bump into the same people and so did not always feel a stranger. I also preferred the more conventional set table for dining rather than free style. You might not be 'forever friends' with the people on your set table but it gave you an anchor each evening. I found that having a different set of people to dine with each night meant having to repeat again and again the 'why are you on your own' questions which could be very intrusive night after night.

I have done some holidays with Great Rail Journeys - again a bit pricey but very well organised and they do like to look after you, but not so much you feel stifled.

The great thing about cruises as well is that there is always something exciting to look forward to, and also plenty to talk about to the people you do meet - always new topics of conversation which can also help you feel less on your own.

Have a great time!

Re: Travelling as a single

I have almost always travelled alone, so would now probably find it harder to travel with someone! But many past holidays involved diving, so I automatically met people with a similar interest.
But if it concerns you, do you have any hobbies or interests that you could focus holidays on? Walking, art, photography, birds etc are just a few of the specialist holidays you could go on and meet like-minded people.

Re: Travelling as a single

I have had a period of being alone..and I find people take you under their wings...

Last example was when I was on a cross channel ferry..I sat down..and a load of Americans sat beside me..

One of them who was from texas..got off his phone..and said to me ''what is the name of that small island we have just visited?''

I replied it is called ''England''

When we got to France..they didn't speak French..so I put them on a train to Paris..with many tears on their part..

Got into Arras and stayed in a bed and breakfast situated over a bar...next day..I was drinking coffee..and talking to the owner of the bar..he offered me a job..a room..and a wage..

You can have so much fun!!
