Thanks Joe.

They have recovered the Black box so amid all of the wild rumours we could soon have the reason for the ships demise.

Re: The Italian cruise ship disaster.

It was reported on BBC Breakfast news last night that the reason the ship run aground was because the Captain was trying to 'show off' to someone ashore. The ship was, reportedly more than four miles, FOUR MILES!!! off course and was far too close to the island, irrespective of whether, as the Captain says, the rocks were not marked on his chart. If that was so, then his charts were equally inaccurate and he should have given the island a lot more offing and sea room.

The Company that owned the ship and the Italian Police in their preliminary investigation, also believe the Captain was at fault, hence his arrest on potential Manslaughter charges.

Re: The Italian cruise ship disaster.

It is sad to hear that another cruise liner has gone down, and that people have died or been hurt when they were surposed to be on a relaxing holiday.
I first heard of this tragedy on sky news who keep you well informed of any developments that go on throughout the day.
I was shocked to hear that the captain had left the ship whilst there were still people onboard. I always remember being told that the captain - not so much goes down with the ship but makes sure everyone is saved before leaving themself.
If the captain did leave the ship does that mean it is open for anyone to salvage?
They were still finding people late yesterday afternoon. Not nice for the familys at home waiting for news of their loved ones.

Re: The Italian cruise ship disaster.

I just read that the gash in the side of the cruise ship was 160 feet long.
Amazing that so many people made it to safety.

Exactly, Uncle Joe. He'd taken the liner too close to Giglio supposedly to show off, so the rocks would not have been charted where a ship wasn't meant to be in the first place.

That Captain is 100% culpable for what has happened and most certainly should be charged with manslaughter at the very least, and for him to have abandoned his own ship without seeing to the welfare of his passengers first just goes to show that he was not fit for his post and that he was without honour and integrity.

Tonight on Ch.4 at 8pm. This is a programme exploring how and why the Costa Concordia went down. Can't think it will be much of a programme, it takes the professionals years to give an answer and just as long for the insurance people to pay out.
