Cambridge's Dutch roundabout damaged by hit-and-run driver

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-53736468

The UK's first Dutch-style roundabout has had to close for three nights after it was damaged by a hit-and-run driver.

The £2.3m roundabout on Fendon Road, Cambridge, which gives priority to cyclists and pedestrians, was damaged the day before it officially opened on 31 July.

Cambridgeshire County Council said a driver hit a zebra crossing beacon and repairs began on Monday night.

It is expected to fully reopen on Thursday.

The Dutch-style design gives priority to cyclists and pedestrians with an inner ring for cars and an outer one for cyclists. The idea is to "influence slower approach and departure speeds".

There are zebra crossings for pedestrians on each of the four roundabout arms.

Cyclists have their own outer-ring cycle path in contrasting red to give them equal priority with pedestrians.
Pedestrians and cyclists with right of way over vehicles .....

So vehicles exiting and entering the roundabout have to check the crossing and cycle path while checking roundabout vehicle traffic and stop if a cyclist or pedestrian is on (or, presumably, approaching) the crossing or the cycle path .....

This roundabout will more that likely increase more deaths and traffic collisions due to people not understanding how to use it properly.

Maybe we all need a long holiday (at the governments expense) in Holland to understand how the system works

As soon as I saw the thing a few weeks ago, I thought of all the deaths and near misses that will occur on that roundabout. There are plans to build more of them but most likely the idea will be scrapped along with bendy busses. It's good to see the Council have already started repairs though. Anything like that around here takes months to put right.

Sheer madness in the extreme. So your in a car on the roundabout with the cycle lane on your nearside, possibly in a car rear blind spot, and you turn off it right into the path of a cyclist.
Who had the brain power of a gnat to dream this one up

or more than one car leaving an exit will block the roundabout and cause accidents

Why are the zebra crossings so close to the entrances to the roundabout? You'd think that they would be further up the roads approaching the roundabouts to minimise danger. Car drivers tend to look to the right for oncoming traffic before entering roundabouts so may not notice pedestrians.

Stupid idea.

Exactly. Who's going to be looking left apart from French lorry drivers?
