Re: Weekly Covid cases in England up to highest level since June

I think it was on BBC News or The Andrew Marr Show this morning where it was said that the latest swab tests are now thought to be far too sensitive and are picking up remnants of long dead virus particles in peoples' samples. These false positives are now skewing the data. However, there is little point in reducing the sensitivity of the testing regime because some positive results would be missed.

Coronavirus: Further 2,988 cases confirmed in UK

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54050342

A further 2,988 cases of coronavirus have been reported in the UK in the past 24 hours, government data showed.

It is the highest number reported on a single day since 22 May and a rise of 1,175 on Saturday, according to the UK government's coronavirus dashboard.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he was "concerned" about a rise in cases "predominantly among young people".
That's a big jump .....

Can anyone make sense of this? It seems we're to be given unlicensed vaccines! With no comeback if things go wrong?

This graph, see halfway down the page:

Daily New Deaths in the United Kingdom

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus//country/uk/

puts it into perspective.

Unquote.
I was thinking about those odds and I've no idea how they were calculated but my calculations go like this:

UK population (rounded up) 68,000,000

Recorded COVID-19 cases to date (Rounded up) 350,00

Percentage of cases against population = 350,000/68,000,000*100 = 0.5%

0.5% doesn't sound a lot but, if my calculations are correct then 1 person, young or old, in every 200 has been recorded as a COVID-19 case. If the infection rate stays at 2,000 per day then, by Xmas, there will have been 600,000 cases (or thereabouts), which is getting on for 1 out of every 100 people (1% of the population) .....

That's very simplistic and takes no account of variables but it illustrates that the longer the pandemic lasts then the more chance that the uninfected will be infected. That sounds obvious but it's clear that certain elements of the population haven't grasped the fact that the pandemic is NOT over until the fat lady sings .....

The death rate is all relevant, and that's now very low. Maybe the whole world will have it by Xmas, maybe that will be not a bad thing.

I didn't say that.

But now you mention it ...

If it's no longer killing us, then perhaps it's for the best.

In the meantime, I'll be keeping a low profile.

For those over 50, the after-effects of a severe COVID-19 infection are sometimes worse than death .....
