There are fine ethical guidelines around photographing nesting birds. These guys were about 20 metres above a popular walking track, I didn't hang around for long, I had a serious zoom and I have cropped the image. All that said, what a joy to capture this moment as a parent cares for its chicks.

Each year female flatback turtles return to their nesting sites at Port Hedland in the iron-ore rich Pilbara region. When high tides occur at sundown or after sunset, the turtles make their way onto Cemetery Beach at Port Hedland, undeterred by the presence of people on the beach. They head up above the high tide mark to the base of the frontal sand dunes where they dig their nest and deposit the eggs. The nesting season is from from early Nov to late December and the eggs hatch from February through to April, with the hatchlings making their way back to the sea.

As the wild November weather continues

As the wild November weather continues, our colleagues up north are fighting bush fires while a combined crew 338 Jindabyne and 426 Perisher Valley attended a single vehicle rollover in alpine conditions this afternoon near Spencers Creek.

Thankfully all occupants were uninjured and able to exit the vehicle. Our firefighters put their HAZMAT skills to good use to contain and clean up the fluids that were leaking from the inverted vehicle into the snow and minimise any damage to the environment.

Backyard chickens

Backyard chickens - the pet that poops breakfast! We hatched Miss Chickadee earlier in the year - so far the dog hasn't eaten her (yay), and in fact she's given him a good sharp peck on the nose when he got too close, and she comes running for a pat whenever we go outside! I'm not sure she realises that she is in fact a chicken. She's just the coolest (and fattest) hen
