Will Covid-19 lead to long-term food shortages and price rises?

Just by chance, looking for some cooking instructions as I often do, I found what I thought was an interesting item about possible food shortages due to COVID-19 so have posted it for others to read if they wish:

Hi

Nope, I do nor believe that it will.

We are going to have a shortage of chicken and higher prices for a while due to an outbreak of Covid at one of our major meat plants which has closed for a while.

It's that BBC up to it's old tricks again Baz, after watching the vid everybody will be going out again panic buying...There wouldn't have been a shortage before if the beeb hadn't told us there was going to be a shortage......

We'll not go hungry, maybe just change our eating habits for a while....

People will cope by improvising, prioritising and rationing. We are buying less because we are not browsing.

Keeping to a budget is a must when retired so if things get too expensive we'll find an alternative.

I don't have a problem getting hold of anything now I no longer have to go into a 'virtual queue ' at the flour mill to order baking supplies.
Having discovered new sources of supply locally I am going to carry on supporting them as they have supported me.

I don't envisage any shortages except if the weather causes a problem unless people listen to scare stories and panic buy leading to artificial shortages.

One thing I did have a problem getting was freezer bags/kitchen bin bags then I found out the manufacturer were making PPE.
I was able to buy them in bulk online and now have a years supply.

What video is that OGF, I am not aware there was one? Anyway, I read the article and found it was interesting, showing different foods and how they might be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It didn't seem to be using 'scare tactics' to cause panic buying. Personally the pandemic might have shown people how valuable small shops are, the supermarkets couldn't cope with the demands on their online shopping facilities but some local, smaller shops were able to supply and deliver free.

Maybe if people didn't want to have produce out of season our growers would be able to supply more. Strawberries out of season are nowhere near as tasty as home-grown ones. It's the supermarkets' ability to get prices down and supply but often that is at the expense of quality. I've changed buying from various supermarkets as their produce is not good quality and goes off before I am able to use it. Not a lot of good getting it cheaper if it's unusable.

The only thing I couldn't get was rice for risottos, but a man in Waitrose suggested I use pearlised spelt instead... and it was lovely.
I really think the supermarkets import too many things & then we all feel we can't manage without them. Perhaps if we made the effort to find British substitutes it would help our economy & remind us how good fresh food tastes.
I can honestly say I have eaten no takeaways & the only processed food I have bought is some sugar free yoghurts & a couple of stir-in pasta sauces ( which I could have made myself is I hadn't been lazy!)

I do think prices will go up though, because supermarkets will want to regain the huge profits they have always made from food!
