I predict a riot

"Police were called to deal with angry shoppers yesterday after a 99p shop stopped its half-price closing down sale mid-afternoon.

Crowds of bargain-hunters who'd gone to the 99p Store in Wrexham specially for the 'Everything 50p' sale refused to leave after store managers said they weren't closing down after all and were putting prices back up to 99p.

They told shoppers - some of whom had queued for hours - that they’d renegotiated their lease at the last minute, so the sale was off, but it wasn't enough to placate the crowds who refused to move until prices came down again."

Are people that desperate or just plain greedy?

I dunno, but there seems to be mob mentality when everyone's chasing the same bargains, and the very thought of going home and telling the other half you got nothing is too much to bear.

A lot of what 99p Stores sell could be considered tat but they also carry branded products for somewhere between a half and a third of what they would cost in one of the major supermarkets.
Yes, some of those shoppers could be considered greedy but it'll be some time before they to restock on some of those items.

'Buy cheap buy twice' looks like a load of tat before the sale to me.

If the 99p store can afford to sell things at half price, how much profit are the other stores that sell some of that stuff!

Re: I predict a riot

It really isn't all tat they sell branded goods and you can get for instance £3.99 washing powder for 99p in there some days. Dismiss it as tat by all means but it's a huge saving for many people.

I would suggest there is some greed there but also desperation for some which is very sad to see.

I don't know for sure Twiz but they may do what my husbands employer does, they buy pallets of short coded chocolates and vending coffee and cans of pop, put it in the vending machines hoping it will sell quickly. Luckily stuff usually goes really fast and there is little waste. But that 90p twix may have cost only 10p per unit on the pallet, it's still within use by date but the supermarkets won't touch it because it only has a week or two left on it.

They do make a healthy profit but they gamble every time they buy a pallet of food whether it will make a profit that week or not.
