This is bad practice and can produce a fear of water for life....

I wasn’t pushed in but never really learned to swim properly .
I do a sort of breaststroke come doggy paddle about four strokes of crawl ( I never mastered the breathing technique) and if tired a bit of side stroke .
I am so slow it takes me ages to do a length .

Agreed. But hardly any stinging eyes due to the fresh air mitigating the chlorine. No need for goggles back then. Also remember there being a roller mangle on poolside to get the worse of the water out of one's trunks.

Spending 6d for a lucky dip paper bag with a sherbert flying saucer, some chocolate buttons, a couple of aniseed things in it, possibly a lemon bonbon and,if you were very very lucky, a little metal/wooden puzzle.

You've opened the floodgates here!!!

Foil wrapped potatoes in a coal fire during the electricity strikes. Candle lit home made entertainment.

My favourite meal was vermicelli, heavily laced with butter, with chunks of some kind of german sausage

Working out how to light the pilot light on a gas geyser(using long matches) and hence running a bath from it. Getting an occasional electric shock from the metal roll top bath due to the wiring in the house being made from cables enclosed in some kind of fabric cloth, with a lead outer sheath. Lord know how we survived!!!

Re: Things from your childhood that no one will know now

I too never learnt to swim, i get panic attacks if water covers my face. Apparently , so I was told, at the age of about 3 I fell into an uncles garden pond and a cousin a bit older than me pulled me out. my uncle had the pond filled in after that as I had nearly drowned. Anyway that is what I was told
