Where does the soil go ?

In raised beds .
I have a few and top them up every year but every year they need topping up .

I goes through the earthworms and the earthworms get eaten!

Apparently,earthworms play a big part,in breaking down the soil...quite an interesting read...

I have the opposite problem, I top mine up with home made compost every year but then have to raise the height of the beds to accommodate it!

It’s mr muddy digging a tunnel and dispersing it down his trouser leg when he goes to the park...

I used to think this down the allotment. I was always putting more on top, especially when we had deliveries of compost and/or manure.

I thought the same thing the other day, each year I empty the content pf the compost bin into the raised beds along with some farmyard manure and it always fits

My raised bed also sinks and has to be topped up.

What l want to know is how stones and bits of crockery seem to move up to the top in the soil.
