Re: MIY - Make It Yourself

OH and me make a good team.
I do the building work and she does the plastering, painting etc..
I cook the family meals and she bakes the cakes and pastry.
I do the digging and she does the gardening.
She knits and sews, I do a bit of cross stitch.

She does the shopping - I pay the bills!!

Very impressive range of skills here. Love GW's photos.

I think all I make from scratch is soup. Either shop bought mushrooms or allotment tomatoes. Have the ingredients for carrot & coriander but never got round to it.

I DO have some woodwork items in my home that I built at evening classes, all still very much in use.

Re: MIY - Make It Yourself

My father was in the building trade and after the 11+, I went to Technical college instead of the Grammar school as my parents wanted. I learned a lot of basic skills there before the academic stream took over.

On two occasions I've had to make bespoke doors which I made using hand-cut mortice&tenon joints. I'm quite happy to try most things - even fitted a new skylight with the aid of tools and scaffolding loaned free by my neighbour who is a builder.

Unfortunaely my creative design skills are pretty minimal.

Re: MIY - Make It Yourself

Like Deb I make heaps of things.

All my own jams, pickles, chutneys even Peanut Butter.
Bread, cakes,biscuits,Desserts, Ice cream, Yoghurt.
Pies, pasties, sausage rolls.
Grow and freeze my own vegetables and herbs (dry them as well)
Make syrups for flavouring water, lemon orange strawberry etc.
Home made ginger beer.
Knit, sew, crochet, tapestry.
Make my own laundry liquid.
Make natural sprays for pests in the garden.
Freeze fruit off the trees for cooking during the year.
Do all our decorating, painting, tiling etc.

Think that's enough although I would like to have a go at cheesemaking.

Making compost is an art. You have to know how much of everything to put in so it doesn't become too smelly. I never put orange/lemon skins in mine, nor onion pieces. Worms don't like those ingredients.

It has to be a good mix of wet and dry ingredients. My vegies love compost.

Am picking and drying grapes at the moment. Have had good rains, so have lovely big bunches of grapes.
