Yeah, I've noticed that too lilac.

First of all the hygienist was insisting I needed a special inter-dental brush for the plaque but I had plenty of sets of the little inter-dental brushes given to me free when I helped move a dentist and I was still using them up then.

Now it's a special head for a Braun she's pushing!

I wonder if they get commission? stevmk2

Of course they do..

One of my fellow workers daughter went to the hairdressers..(she is 17...)

Got her hair cut and styled..and was then told that the hairdresser had spotted a teeny weeny bald patch..and if she rubbed her head daily with the magic elixer she was selling..this would stop..

Of course she bought it..only 40 quid..

Unfortunately I need some treatment as I have gum disease which means I have to see the hygienist who will give a local anaesthetic to get to the sensitive areas and do a deep clean.
I don't mind seeing her once a year but I think 4 months isn't necessary, I'm going to cancel the appointment and wait until my next check up is due and see what the dentist says

Re: NHS Dental charges gripe!

We have been with our current NHS dentist for 22 years, no problems and you know exactly what the charges are.

Never yet had to see the hygienist, dentist removes any plaque and polishes.

Despite my rigorous regime of cleaning my teeth all my life i got gum disease too Honey.

I'm a bit mystified though about the advice you have been given regarding hygienist appointments.

I actually asked a dental surgeon a few years ago about gum disease and the preventative measures you can take and he told me - quite emphatically - all I could do and all hygienists could do was to try to keep it in check as there is no definitive cure.

I've lost all but 7 of my own teeth, despite years of caring for them, right down to the years I regularly wore a tooth brush around my neck at all times, much to the mirth of my work colleagues at that time, but you can't fight nature!

I go to a hygienists twice a year; I ignore the revenue -enhancing phrase "you need it every 4 months" 'cos that's all it is - a means to make more money out of you.

If you do your utmost to try to keep your teeth, no amount of hygienist expertise is going to make that much difference!

It's like everything these days Honey - we're advised this, that, the other "needs" to be done regularly but it all costs us dosh and some of us mind our dosh better than others yet suffer no more dire effects on their teeth than those who abide by the hygienists / dentist preferred mantra and cough-up more regularly. stevmk2

Re: NHS Dental charges gripe!

I agree with you totally! incidentally, do you have to pay privately? I can't understand it when they say the dentist refers you to the hygienist and initially it's on the NHS scale then suddenly you're faced with private treatment for further appointments
