Re: Over 50s Club Yorkshire

Interesting rock formations at the top of Shipley Glen.
A small gnome can be seen hiding in its cave.

A house in Saltaire.
Titus Salt, being a Quaker, would not allow public houses in his model village. As can be seen in this picture, he did however attempt to cater for certain other needs of his men.

Great pics JBR

Indeed Titus Salt was an innovative employer he looked after the well being of those who worked for him ensuring his factories were fitted with dust extraction and that the black smoke bellowing out of the factories in Leeds and Bradford mills was not replicated in Saltaire. Saltaire is well worth a visit as is the David Hockney gallery in the Salts Mill....nice restaurants there too

I did indeed JBR and I looked it up the name Fanny Street refers to his daughter Fanny Salt... she was born in Saltaire and died very young just before her 20th Birthday of TB.

Sorry to disappoint you on that it wasn't their very own red light area

Actually I read that he named all the streets after his family or close friends.

Oh yes, I realise it wasn't a red light area, but the notion highly amused me!

Marge tells me that I'm childish. I don't care.

Just as an aside, can you imagine anyone naming their daughter Frances these days?

The poor girl would be the target of constant ribbing at school.

I wonder if anyone has.

Re: Over 50s Club Yorkshire

All those old names are coming back, I couldn't believe it when my son told me my little grandson was to be called Stanley I hadn't heard the name for years and it just seemed so old-fashioned and not a baby name at all. He is 5 months old now and Stan suits him fine

Fanny by gaslight though.....Maybe not

Re: Over 50s Club Yorkshire

Infamy!

Observe the latest sacrilege from the USA, the total bastardisation of our county's finest dish, created in Yorkshire and loved everywhere in this green and pleasant land.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-44123786

No doubt they will be claiming this dish as their own like they have with many fine inventions stolen from the UK.
