Anne Cleeves - Vera books - much, much better than the TV series.
Michael Connelly - the Harry Bosch series.

Oh, yes - The Harry Bosch series are great reads too.

Two more British writers for consideration:

Mark Billingham - DI Tom Thorne series based in London.

Stephen Booth - his books follow the career of Ben Cooper from lowly detective constable to DI (based in Derbyshire dales and moorlands) and his right royal PITA DS Diane Fry.

Yep Billingham's good. He's also an actor and stand-up comedian, the Tom Thorne series is good crime fiction with a lighthearted edge.
