Apologies to Annie. Just seen this story in your 'Is the World getting too crowded' thread.

What was the port pilot thinking ??? - ships that big can't exactly do an emergency stop. The port pilot should have been proceeding at 'Slow Ahead' from some miles outside the port and use the tugs to slow it down even further if necessary and use the bow and stern thrusters - what was this idiot thinking ???

Re: Cruise ship collides with dock & tourist boat

The problem with cruise ships has been a thing in Venice for a good twenty years.

There was talk ages ago about implementing a cruise ship tax, but I don't know if that's been done.

One of the problems, so I was told, is that cruise passengers flood ashore for a few hours, but hardly spend any money. They don't stay in the hotels, they don't spend a lot in restaurants because they get all their meals on the ship, so they cause over-crowding for no huge gain to the Venice population, unlike visitors who come and actually stay in Venice.

The trouble is, like so many things, there are vested interests.

Controls failed. I am surprised that it didn't take the bow of the ship off / put a hole in it or cause more damage to the quay.

These Italian ships seem to have had their fare share of problems of the last few years.

Like aircraft and space craft, cruise liners have more than one set of controls, the pilot should have used the bow and stern thrusters to slow and stop the vessel. There were also a number of tugs too, and the pilot should have been in telephone/radio communication with them and they too could have assisted to slowing/stopping the vessel.

Seemingly, one of the tug's tow-ropes snapped also and the remaining tugs weren't strong enough to slow the ship down after its engines couldn't be shut down.

Re: Cruise ship collides with dock & tourist boat

The Cruise Ships are now coming up here and they're a blooming pest, some are too big to get into the Harbour and the passengers have to come ashore by small boats. It's not as if they even put much money into the place, they mooch around the few shops but very seldom buy and they don't eat as they get all their meals on board. Then they move on to the Orkneys where it's much the same performance there. Just seeing the sights then going back on board.
