Re: Gooseberries

Lovely things.
I've got 2 bushes of red berries and they provide enough to see us through the year for pies and crumbles; also a sharp(ish) sauce to go with e.g. oily fish like mackerel or rich meat like duck
I think you sometimes see them in the shops and markets?

Re: Gooseberries

We have two bushes and get quite a good crop each year, we had to get rid of about 6 old bushes that were here when we arrived and which had bad mildew, and I think we might plant aniother bush next year.

I love them in pies and OH bottles them so I can have them in my porridge in the mornings. I'll send you some next summer Denis

Re: Gooseberries

We used to have several large shrubs when I was a child and my Mum made the most amazing, near-black, tart, sticky jam from them. Absolutely to die for!

It is a fruit I'm considering planting at the allotment for next year and having a go at making the jam myself

They're good value for the allotment Yola - plant 'em and forget 'em; my favourite!

Re: Gooseberries

Do they do thornless ones (haven't checked yet)? Not sure I want one or other daft small child landing in a prickly one
