Re: Is this the start of a post-Brexit boom?

On the heels of Nissa last week comes news that Lotus, backed by part-owners Geeley who also own Volvo etc., are to begin production of the “Type 131” prototype this year.
Smaller in scale this might be but it is significant in that a smaller manufacturer is continuing and indeed moving forward with UK production of cars.

"Lotus is to invest £100m in new manufacturing facilities at its Norfolk base to build a new range of sports cars."

"It will take on a further 250 staff in addition to the almost 1,500 already employed by the company"

' Phil Popham, chief executive, said 2021 would be “hugely significant, with new facilities coming on stream, a new sports car entering production and new levels of efficiency and quality that only a new car design and factory can deliver”. '

All their cars models begin with the letter "E" did you know that ?

I still think the Esprit is one of the most amazing looking high performance cars ever made.

I really do hope Lotus do well this time around.

Me too.
At one time I very, very nearly bought a new Elise.
I was offered one in bright yellow at a very good price.
Until the head very sensibly won over the heart.

They are gorgeous cars and lovely to drive too.
Oh and I must admit that I too loved the Esprit.
I used to pass one (that was always parked up) on my way to work every day.

Re: Is this the start of a post-Brexit boom?

I've spoken before about the UK's booming space industry and here is news of a company that has recently started working with the US Navy which is using its design for the new $22bn USS Zumwalt destroyer programme, and is trialling its technology with the US army too.
So promising is this new technology that the company has forecast export revenues of £1 billion by 2028!

"Isotropic Systems, a Reading-based company, builds ground satellite terminals that use optical lenses to receive signals from multiple satellites at once.

While most ground receivers use motors to move their dish as satellites travel across the sky, Isotropic’s antennas bend radio waves, similar to how light can be bent. This means the dish has no moving parts and can receive multiple signals at once.

John Finney, chief executive of Isotropic, said: “What we are doing is radically different to what has been available to the industry for the last 20 years. The use of optical lenses allow us to point and re-point radio waves in any direction we choose.”

"Brian Schettler, of Boeing HorizonX Global Ventures, said: “The development of Isotropic’s unique radio frequency optical technology will further accelerate the expansion of space-based connectivity.” Boeing is also a shareholder in Abingdon-based Reaction Engines, which is developing hypersonic engines."

Re: Is this the start of a post-Brexit boom?

Following on from recent news about Britishvolt building a battery gigafactory in Northumberland comes news of a smaller but important specialist British battery company from Thurso being floated on the London Stock Exchange.

"A British maker of batteries that provide power boosts for high-performance electric vehicles is to float on the London Stock Exchange.

Amte Power, a leader in the nascent homegrown market for electric car battery cells, which works with Jaguar Land Rover, Williams and Cosworth, has filed an intention to float on the junior Aim market."

"Amte is developing and already manufacturing cells that provide the burst of power needed for high-performance vehicles, rather than batteries to provide cars with a long range on a single charge. It expects its customers to also include Aston Martin, BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz, as well JCB, whose electric vehicles also depend on high energy levels."

' “Britain absolutely can step up in the homegrown battery arena,” Amte’s chief executive and co-founder Kevin Brundish, 50, said. “We do not lack for competence and experience in this country which is also very much the home for high-performance automotive.” '

Re: Is this the start of a post-Brexit boom?

Again related to batteries and hot on the heels of other Cornish and Scottish lithium-mining which has been discussed before, here's news of another Cornish company that believes there is a large amount of untapped tin, copper and lithium underneath the 15,000 hectares of land they own and they're going to see how feasible it will be to extract them.

"Richard Williams, chief executive, said there was strong demand for these metals, which are fundamental to growing high-tech industries, spanning electric cars, battery technology, renewable energy, computing, data storage and robotics."

"The company wants to complete exploratory drilling and feasibility studies and eventually build new processing plants when the mines become fully operational.

Mining in Cornwall dates back thousands of years and Cornish Metals believes that as prices for tin, copper and lithium rise, demand for ethically produced metals will also increase."

Something different?
How about Coronavirus, and news of another way that British expertise and genius will help to tackle this and other diseases in the future?
We know that the government are funding the VMIC which will undoubtedly keep the UK at the fore of such research but this adds another string to the proverbial bow:

"UK partners with CureVac to tackle future Covid-19 variants"

I used to like the Lotus Europa as driven by Tara King in the Avengers TV series.
