The French pay more tax than we do.
That may be the case but it's a progressive system. It also depends on the personal situation not one size fits all so there is no uniform rate. We do not tax the wealthy here but those on average incomes while the wealthy live a life of riley. It must be a system designed by the rich.

Quite a bit given it's taxpayers money. Nhs spend should have nothing to do with his loo as his government department budget is separate but both from taxes or borrowing.

The fact is that the top 1% wealthiest do not pay enough of the tax burden regardless of what the comparison was years ago.
