India reels as summer temperatures touch 50C (122F)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-48495492

Churu, in the northern state of Rajasthan, is India's hottest city - temperatures there soared to 50.8C on Sunday, the meteorological department said.

It has put Rajasthan and the central state of Madhya Pradesh on alert for "severe heat wave conditions". Both states often record some of the highest temperatures at the peak of summer.

But this year has been particularly scorching in other places, too, from the northern plains to the Deccan plateau in the west and the south.

The unrelenting heat has been hardest on the homeless, as well as those who have no choice but to keep working despite the soaring temperatures - such as street vendors, traffic police and rickshaw drivers.

Then there are the thousands of delivery staff powering Amazon or food delivery apps such as Swiggy - they often ferry food from restaurants as people are not keen to leave their homes and offices to brave the heat.

At least seven Indian cities and towns are on Monday's list of the world's 15 hottest places on weather website El Dorado. The remaining eight are in Pakistan, where Jacobabad - at 51C - is being called the hottest place on Earth.

India's meteorological department has said the heat wave is likely to continue for a few more days as the monsoon is delayed.
For me, those temperatures would be intolerable - 27C is about the highest I can endure in the open .....

We are doomed.

My sister-in-law in Lisbon says it's too hot to visit their holiday home just up the coast. They have marble floors and aircon. This has never been known before even in August.

Most I've experienced was low forties. Dry heat so just about tolerable. Fifty? Killer temperature.

The most I've experienced was 44c and it was unbearable. It was when we lived in Spain and on that day it reached that temperature I ventured outside, but not for long as when I breathed it felt like my throat was burning slightly, it was far too hot. 50, oh my goodness, the poor buggers, sorry 42 not 44.

Re: India reels as summer temperatures touch 50C (122F)

Generally speaking I am OK up to 33°C and I have been in the mid 40°s which was just OK. It really all depends on the humidity 33° at 10% humidity is quite a different experience to 33° at 70% humidity. Fortunately humidity here is generally pretty low.

I don't think I have been in temperatures of 50°, though it tried on my back patio last year.

Personally I think the cold is far worse than the heat, as soon as it gets below 20°C I start thinking of warmer places to visit. Of course it is winter here and today's maximum of 19°C means I will be wearing my thermal undies and a jacket all day.

BTW I have to laugh at visits from my Asian friends because they are used to temperatures of 32 to 33°C everyday all year round (it hardly varies) so when it gets to 40° or below 25° here they really suffer.
