Re: Already seeing the benefits of Brexit

UK will lift levies on American goods to encourage end of harsh Scotch whisky tariffs

Liz Truss has spoken to Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, with the aim being that the ongoing dispute can be de-escalated and re-open the USA to Scottish Whiskey etc.
A "government source" said:
""We’re suspending Airbus/Boeing tariffs as a gesture of goodwill and to show the Americans we’re serious about ending the dispute, but if we don’t get what we want we will absolutely put tariffs back on.
Hopefully we can end this senseless conflict, because ultimately it’s the Chinese that benefit from this tit-for-tat approach."

"Battery boost for the North East: Britain's first gigaplant to be located in Blyth, becoming the fourth largest building in the UK and bringing 3,000 new jobs to Northumberland"

That's 3,000 PLUS 5,000 in "the wider supply chain".

"By 2028, the firm estimates it will be producing around a billion cells - enough for 300,000 lithium-ion batteries installed in electric cars - for the UK automotive industry per year in a bid to attract vehicle makers to manufacture in Britain."
"The site is set to not only be the fourth largest building in the UK but the sixteenth largest in the world and the second largest gigaplant in existence, gazumped only by Tesla's Nevada facility."

"Remain economic forecasts left in shreds"
Another excellent and honest summary from John Redwood..

"What will happen after we have left the single market and customs union?

According to official forecasts from forecasters known for their belief in the advantages of the single market, the UK economy will experience the sharpest rate of improvement in 2021 it has seen for decades. The CBI thinks we will grow a lively 6% in 2021 and a further 5.2% in 2022. Oxford Economics thinks we will grow by more than 10% next year and outgrow other European economies and the USA by a large margin."

I love John Redwood, him and Bill Cash have been brilliant for Brexit.

Two further benefits occur to me as a result of this decision.

Firstly, such a large production facility could result in batteries for electric vehicles becoming cheaper. This would not only reduce the price of electric cars, but may also make them more attractive in that when batteries need replacing (and being disposed of as they can't be recycled - or so I have heard) the cost of replacements may end up being a good deal less.

The other thing is that this site would provide a great increase in available work in an area which has traditionally been short of opportunities. Being approved by a Conservative government, I wonder whether many of the staunch Labour supporters in the North-East might change a long-held tradition of voting against the party which, over many decades, has been of more benefit to the country than those who always manage to damage the country.

Re: Already seeing the benefits of Brexit

Regarding the first part of your reply and batteries becoming cheaper:

This new factory must surely tie-in with Corwall's substantial lithium deposits and this new industry being developed apace.

One company, Cornish Lithium, had to stop crowdfunding mid-October because it was hugely over-subscribed! *1
I will post a Tweet showing their factory and if you look it says that the lithium will also power satellites and more. *2

Then there is also British Lithium - also based in Cornwall - who aim initially to produce enough Cornish lithium to,and I quote, "support production in UK of 350,000 EVs per year, giving UK a strategic advantage over Europe." *3
There's more info. on their website: *4

So despite warnings re: Brexit it does look as if the UK could well potentially become a major global player in the rising (but still in it's infancy) trend for electrically-powered vehicles just at the right time, as traditional combustion-engined vehicles start a steep decline in production.

That is, let's be honest, one heck of an achievement even at this early stage.

Re: Already seeing the benefits of Brexit

The sort of benefits I want to see are not tangible , to me leaving the EU is not about will I have to pay more for Brie which apparently will go up 40% with tariffs ( I don't touch it anyway , I prefer british made cheese ) or other products from the EU most of which I can live without and if there are tariffs, we *import more from the EU so will collect more in import tariffs anyway. For me it is all about having command of our own laws/seas/taxes/how we run our country and getting the hell out of the bog before we get dragged down any further under the feet of the French and Germans who seem to have power over all the other member states of the EU .

These last few weeks watching the attitude of the EU has made me angry, it is quite clear from their insistence on a 'level playing field 'or 'dynamic alignment ' that the EU is scared to death that once out from under their boot heel
we have the ability to do a lot better them them.

So for me the 'benefit' comes with freedom and if I have to pay a bit more for some things or go without others that's fine.
I am tired of hearing food producers going on about the market for lamb and cheese etc being under threat , the answer is simple lower your prices a little and sell it all here . What is lost in lower prices should be made up from no export costs and selling more.
So there is another benefit, perhaps we will be able to afford to buy our home produced lamb if the French aren't buying half of it.

*Edited to add the word 'import' .
