Definitely! I'm impressed.

Hi Aysa, yes tied my own flies for many years. Started fishing as a very young lad in short trousers on the beach at Hove, once they cleared it of mines and barb-wire after the war. Mothers today would not let their children go on their own, great shame. Still a passion for angling has been rewarded by a close relationship with nature and the countryside.
Alas now a worsening disability is bringing it to a end.

Re: I made that!

You certainly have a passion for angling Duke, its lovely that something you began in childhood has stayed with you through life..hopefully you can find other ways to enjoy nature and the countryside that will satisfy the itch. Its always a shame when a disability hampers what we want to do.

Re: I made that!

Th'Angler
Now young Sam were a bit of an angler
It were said of quite some renown
'Cos 'e once catched a salmon in th' Irwell
Although it wern't pink - it were brown !

As a lad 'e were quite a scholar
Seemin' to stand out from the rest
But 'is consumin' passion were fishin'
And watchin' while t' brids built their nest

I 'eard as 'ow one day whilst fishin'
In t' Lune or somewhere like that
'E were castin a booby at t' fishes
When 'is 'ook caught in t' vicar's wife's 'at

'Oo were standin' on t' bridge when it 'appened
And 'er face turned from off-white to peach
And th' affair caused so-much commotion
As t' bobby were called into t' breach

Now Sam 'ad a fair sense of humour
And 'e felt like 'is 'eart were on wings
As 'e 'eld back a chuckle and calm- like 'e said
As ow it were 'just one 'o them things'

Well t' vicars wife Mabel were gettin' fair vexed
At th'ook still caught-up in 'er 'at
And she tugged and she pulled and
She pulled and she tugged
Saying well-well, tut-tut, and that's that !

Then Mabel finally plucked-up 'er courage
And found 'er voice-like at last
Saying 'compensation 'as got to be paid'
But young Sam 'e just smiled and stood fast

Now t' bobby thought 'e were King Solomon
'Cos wisdom of 'is judgement were neat
'E said 'appen this lad 'll gi' thee a salmon
And young Sam 'e said 'aye -well alreet'

Well Sam, when they'd gone, were real pleased wi' 'is sel'
So pleased as 'e couldn't 'elp shout
'Cos it weren't a salmon as 'eed giv' 'er
It were no'but a common brown trout !

Re: I made that!

Ha,Ha Mr Purwell, you are coming over all poetic now. That for sure is a modern verse as it reads "E were casting a Booby Fly". Booby Flies are a modern creation for animal fishermen, unlike purist like me. To get the best from Boobies they need to be fished with a gentle rising and falling motion and are irresistible to the large mouth of a big trout.

Yes I make them also.

To complete your education trout have white flesh (I know suckers buy them dyed pink from eating pellets).
The Salmon, the longest standing british freshwater rod caught record, a fish of 64lb caught by the Lock Keepers daughter, Miss Ballantine in 1922. It is the female scent pheromones which attracts fish, for starters.
So today was not wasted , it is good to learn

Re: I made that!

That was my 'monologue' Duke that I wrote about a colleague of mine when I worked for a living 24 years ago.
He was a keen angler who also made flies, I, on the contrary, have never fished in my life !

Re: I made that!

It took a few days by the time preservative was put on the wood, it was hung on the hinges and the lock fitted.
