How Can I Soften Hard Supermarket Strawberries?

I bought three punnets of strawberries (Egyptian) from Sainsburys yesterday and they are so hard!
Please would anyone know if it's possible to soften them?

It won't be easy Art! Perhaps they are not ripe, and if so, you could put them in a bowl with some bananas... apparently bananas speed up the ripening of other fruits.

You could try putting a banana in with them. But the moral is don`t buy them again in future-stay seasonal.

I know what you mean Art, and it spoils them completely. I won't buy them out of our growing season because of this and the lack of flavour.
It's the same with some tomatoes too. Hard centres and thick skins and not much flavour.
I suppose they are bred that way to withstand the long transport, else they'd be a pulp before they arrived on the shelves..

I vaguely seem to think you can put them in brown paper bags to ripen them, but have never tried it.

Hi

You could try plying them with alcohol, that tends to soften things.

Twink and Mups, Thank You for your advice. I have worked so hard all Christmas and the following days, yesterday was my first day out!
Yes, it is the wrong time of the year but I just fancied some strawberries and cream to treat myself with some champagne l got for Christmas!

Just a couple of seconds in a microwave will help but don't let them heat up or you will have cooked strawberries instead.
