Re: Wretched hospital food

I was told ( behind the palm) once by a nurse that it was as much to do with producing as inoffensive stools as possible as to anything else. Maybe she was pulling my leg but it's logical I guess.

Yep Keezoy, a responsible patient should not want a Nurse to have to face the aftermath of a Chicken Madras.

Re: Wretched hospital food

The food is atrocious in our local hospital. Mainly because nothing is fresh any more - it is all the catering equivalent of 'convenience' junk. Mass produced anonymous slop. Bad enough in the cafe - but - by the time it reaches the wards it is disgusting and cold.

Re: Wretched hospital food

Once upon another lifetime many years ago ( during one of my five lifes ) i was a professional cook. I cooked 6 days a week in a very busy pub , home cooked good quality, my food was delicious i was told .

I dont understand how hospital food can be so awful in this day and age when there are ways of keeping food hot and freshly supplied . Even school meals are tasty my granchildten love them and there are hundreds of meals cooked daily . I wonder if there is a head cook who tastes these hospital meals as I gather they are outsourced privately. Someone is making a profit somewhere . Airplane meals are tasty, so why not hospital food .

Id love to take a walk through a hospital kitchen for a few days and observe

Try Nigerian prison --- "food".

Or rather don't.

Susan M, IMO it is the fault of the hospital administrators. I think they simply just don't care.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not expecting steak and eggs for breakfast or anything fancy, but can they not at least use a little seasoning ? Heck, they don't even use salt in their food.

In exasperation, and half starved, I got myself out of bed and went down to the cafeteria, still wearing a hospital gown. I went thru the line and ordered what looked like it might have some flavor, at least it was hot. When I got to the cashier I was told that I could not eat there because I was a patient. The cashier refused to take my money. So, I took my food and sat down to eat, expecting to be hassled by security. I managed to locate some salt and I quickly wolfed down my food before anyone could take it away from me.

So, what is the deal with the horrible cooks in hospitals ?
We are fortunate here in Oswestry where we have the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Hospital (known locally as the Orthopaedic) where all patient meals have always been cooked in the kitchens from scratch by qualified chefs.
In every survey, patients who have stayed for a minimum of one night have judged patients meals top marks to be number One.
The food is superb.

It's the same for cleanliness, they have always had in-house cleaners, local people employed. They have never had outside cleaners. Again voted number One.

Around Oswestry, 18 miles from us in all directions are the hospitals in Shrewsbury, Wrexham and Welshpool. The less said the better!

Re: Wretched hospital food

My sister said the food in our local hospital nr Gt Yarmouth was good, when she was well enough to eat.

I was in UCLH for 9 days in January 2014 and they always offered a huge menu with good choices. Unfortunately for me, I was too sick with the pain and the catheter to enjoy what was on offer. I expect it was very nice!

Only for a few days en route to being deported.

Don't ask!

(And it was many years ago - but I doubt if it has improved any)
