What do you think?

Here's a message I received from Change.org;

''There should be new & stricter laws around safeguarding celebrities and people in the public eye. These laws should be put in place to prevent the newspapers, magazines, all forms of media and paparazzi from:

Releasing information that there is no evidence for and is therefore false
Printing source quotes from anyone or an unreliable source
Invading privacy and sharing private information that is detrimental to the celebrity, their mental health and those around them
Paparazzi taking and printing images without permission
Releasing an individuals private medical or health related information or their sexual orientation
Releasing articles about leaked explicit photos, videos and revenge porn
Stricter legal boundaries regarding unwanted trespassing nearby the property where the individual resides, or is visiting
This will ensure that celebrity’s mental health & human rights are being respect appropriately, safely and with a duty of care. It will also help their family & friend’s mental health as they are affected also as unwanted negative attention is then attracted towards them and invades their privacy too. This will better prevent self harm, suicide, substance abuse, and poor mental health.

Let’s stand together and once and for all make a change.''

Do you think the rules should be different for those in the public eye? What about the ordinary folk who for one reason or another, have their stories splashed across the newspapers? What about their mental health?

That's what I think too. At the very least until one is found guilty of something.

Good question. Deserves a decent answer. I agree with Tiffany. Everybody should be protected by the law no matter who they are. There is a principle, an ideal; then there is reality. Firstly "celebrities", with a few exceptions, are for reason of their fame. Their fame is due to their skill, talent and marketability in their field. They have a right to sell what they have. Celebrity is usually a by product of their job in the public eye. They deserve the same protection under the law as you or me. Secondly they are usually rich so they can afford private security and lawyers to take action against those who violate their rights. The reality is that "ordinary" folk like you and me are lucky in a way that we don't usually have our stories flashed across the public eye. Because we aren't newsworthy. Or at least I'm not. That's my say. Now bring in the clowns.

I agree with most of that but we do get stories (here at least) of the Company director who slept with his secretary and sold the wife's jewels on Ebay (that sort of thing) No one really cares but still, their stories are in the papers for all to see. Online of course, it is there forever.

Exactly this. Anyone should be protected from undue harassment no matter what their station in life. This shouldn't preclude the right to criticise someone.

Absolutely true. Criticism should be expected by everybody. These days there are factions on the left and right who will shut you down and call you a fool, a joke or "rubbish" if you disagree with them or put forward fair and civil criticism. Or they say something cowardly like "Take a pill" or '' don't get your knickers in a knot"..when you react to something really low that would get them a belt in the mouth if they were there person. You have to cop this also. This is where having a "thick skin" is an advantage. But when lies are told or things are said in public that are plain untrue or libelous. Or your personal home is invaded, That is different

Re: What do you think?

Long lenses into someone's private property or holiday should definitely be against the law. If someone has not given consent to the publication of images then why should they be allowed?

Well by law in this country Annie I'm pretty sure you can't publish images of people taken in their private homes without their permission. I'm sure it's the same there. In public, that's a different story as long as the photographer is in plain sight - I think. Check this.
