We Need to Talk About Ireland.

Another excellent article by Catherine McBride that everyone should read.

Catherine McBride warns that the UK must not be tempted into signing a veterinary agreement with the EU in order to avoid border food checks into Northern Ireland

Quote from your link:

Everyone can surely now see that putting a border down the Irish sea and breaking up the UK’s internal market to “preserve the peace” in Northern Ireland (as the EU would have us believe), was a massive mistake.*

Yeah, if only boris had a brain!

Hi

Boris signed up for this, get over it.

We cannot have his type of Brexit without a hard border with the EU.

No exceptions.

IMHO it was signed-up to just for the very reason that the government KNEW it was unworkable.
Now surprise surprise after only a few short months the NI (for political purposes the voices which count) says it is unworkable.
That's why they haven't sorted it out yet.
It's far from settled.

Of course they could have known. Theresa may argued the same consequences of brexit. She knew britain wouldn't be ready for a customs border for some years. Therefore she demanded a backstop, to which she forced the EU to accept. Luckily the EU had a good friend in boris who dumped the backstop.

There is no need for a border down the Irish Sea. It is a UK border so we should just remove it.

What a light ms mcbride is. Quote:

The Northern Ireland Protocol completely ignores the fact that even when the UK was a member of the EU there was already a clearly defined border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland for VAT, Excise Duty and currency. This border existed without the need for guards, border posts or physical checks.*

Yes ms mcbride, that was when both were members of the EU and in the same customs union and single market.
Brexit changed that, requiring that damned protocol! Therefore intelligent people say brexit is the problem, the protocol the solution. Get it?

That's true for brexiters, otherwise they wouldn't have voted to leave. Owning up to the consequences of that vote falls many of them hard to do.
