In case you do not remember that either, basically it ammounted to "but we only said we were going to. We didn't do it.".
What's good for the goose & all that.

It didn't stop the EU ratifying the deal either.

Thank you zappy! You offer the perfect example. It might come as a surprise, but there is a difference between saying you intent to invoke one of the articles of a treaty, or to threaten to break that deal.
But you typically show how british see a treaty. Saddening really.

The EU has launched infringement proceedings under Article 131 in October 2020 over the*UK Internal Market Bill*which if passed in that initial form, would have given UK ministers powers unilaterally disapply aspects of protocol. The EU halted legal proceedings after the UK government dropped the offending clauses of the bill following a*UK–EU agreement*on the issues concerned through the UK–EU Joint Committee.

In March 2021, the vice president of the European Commission said that the EU was launching infringement proceedings against the UK government for a breach of the Northern Ireland protocol. The UK government announced it would*unilaterally extend two of the ‘grace periods’*agreed by the UK and the EU in December – delaying the full application of EU law required under the protocol without the EU’s consent.
This case is still active. As long as no verdict has been given the UK is innocent until proven guilty......

Trust is good, control is better. Therefore parties enter into treaties and agreements, to be able to keep the other party to the agreement.since the UK has shown not to be trusted, the europarliament ratified the deal, tying the UK to the TCA. No escaping anymore.

Again it works both ways.
We could also tie the EU up in knots - and the important thing here is that the EU are glacially slow about everything.
If it were to descend into tit-for-tat we could tie them up for years.
Decades even

But it's all supposition.
