If it's cheaper to transport a container from A to B by train than by lorry, then it's more cost effective.

Reduced cost per ton mile for one thing and reduced pollution per ton mile also.

Why will HS2 be a more cost effective way of sending goods by rail than the existing rail system?

Also, sending goods from A to B by rail might be the most efficient way of transporting them if there happens to be a goods terminal at A, and another one at B, but that will rarely be the case.

So you are saying that HS2 will carry goods significantly more cheaply that the current rail system? How so?

You are also assuming that customers will put the environment before profit.

I don't think HS2 is intended to carry any freight but it will free up capacity on the rest of the network. Well that's the plan.

HS2 is one part of enhancing our whole rail network. As for environment over profit, the government will be loading costs with taxes for less efficient things in general. It's started already.

But neither the public nor industry use the existing rail network to its full potential. A train can never offer the convenience of being able to travel from door to door, or from factory to customer. HS2 is planned to have even fewer stops on its route than with the system that already exists. I also expect HS2 will be very expensive to use, there is an awfully big investment to claw back.

I'm all for rail transport, but I can't see it ever being cheap enough or convenient enough for modern needs.

As the cost of road transport increases, and it surely will because of changes in taxes and road charges being introduced, so rail will become much more attractive. Modern needs are environmentally unaffordable and that will change a great deal as the new normal emerges. Waterways and their use will be interesting to watch too.
