Because they have priced themselves out of reach!

There's a whole lot more than just bums on seats involved in this first phase of the build out of a modern efficient rail network.
Are there any advantages in high speed transportation of goods?

I have always seen the HS2 'experiment' as an option for rich people to get from A to B more quickly.
As 'A' appears to be Londonistan and 'B' seems now to be only Birmistan, I wonder how many such rich people will want to make that journey.

I have always considered HS2 to be a waste of money, but what the hell, it isn't going to cost the politicians a penny so that's OK, isn't it?

Needless to say, the North seems still to be considered a backwater by the people in charge. The existing rail network across the North, incidentally, is believed to be the worst of the whole country, yet apparently is not in need of improvement.

I could very well be wrong but I always thought HS2 was for passenger trains only. I have never heard that it would be used for freight traffic as well.

Maybe, but everything needed was made in the local area and it
only cost about ten thousand quid ??
Whereas ?????
The original concept of HS2 was high speed passenger transport ?
Freight only came into the equation when the government needed
motivating to support its construction !!
I doubt if the track has been designed to cope with the vast
difference in weight between a few passengers and heavily laden
freight trucks which if they reach the "high speeds" as quoted by
you, will take several miles to attain , and even more miles to stop ??
By which time the high speed will have become pointless
The fact that the funds are not enough to complete what was
proposed when the first phase is barely visible yet let alone anywhere
near fit for use does not bode well imo??
I expect the begging bowl to come out again before the year is out !!
