Go to Control Panel/Windows Update and right-click on any updates you don't want and choose `hide` from the pull-down menu. You shouldn't be bothered by further updates.

Morticia

You are in this poor state because you have "Windows Updates" set to run automatically or because you purposefully manually accepted a Windows Update.

Like OldGreyFox I don't ever allow Windows Updates.

So you must decide what you want.

The Windows 10 crap came down in a specific Windows Update whose number is KB3035583.

You can easily uninstall that update and all this stalking will disappear. But if you leave your system set to automatically allow Windows Updates, it will just come down the line again.

There exists a program that someone has developed to stop all the reminders. However, not being a Microsoft programme, you run it at your own risk.

Personally, I would turn off Windows Updates and uninstall update KB3035583.

But it's trying to give it to me. All I did was click off the upgrade box, I did not say I wanted it, but it seems to think I do & it's messing up my pc, because the box for it is so large.

Well how about this then?

https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

Just click the 'Jump to freeware page' and download it there for the free version.
Never10 will tell you whether the Windows 10 upgrade is enabled on your system. If it is, click the “Disable Win10 Upgrade” button.

Simple as that.

Its details can be read in the first link I posted earlier:

http://www.howtogeek.com/218856/how-...fication-tray/

if you scroll about half-way down the page to the section "Never10: The Best and Easiest Way to Prevent Windows 10".

Have a look. It can't hurt!

Re: Win 10 worse than a blasted, pushy door to door salesman

Right .. I went and ferreted out that KB3035583 and uninstalled it.
When I restarted ...Guess what .. it re-installed it back on my laptop.
I've got rid of it again but thus is getting like playing ping pong.

Question.
When you say to stop automatic windows updates do you mean totally?
I'm a bit nervous about doing that as isn't supposed to include stuff I do need?
Or is it best to opt for Check for downloads before downloading and installing .. is that best?

This is beginning to do my head in.
I'm warming to the idea of just connecting to my broadband for a couple of hours a day and then taking myself offline for the rest.

Why can't they damn well just accept I don't want Win 10.
Just lie back and think of England (if you know who's in the team)
