As can be seen Germany did make a profit on their loans to Greece but on the interest on the loans/bonds, as did the other countries mentioned above.

But the figures published by the government on Thursday show that Germany made €3.4 billion in interest payments on the bonds and only paid Greece €527 million in 2013 and €387 million the following year. That left €2.5 billion in profit, plus interest of €400 million on a loan from the KfW development bank.
Hi

I always try to be polite.

I rather think you misunderstand the way Soevreign Finances work.

Greek Bonds were widely purchased by German Financial Institutions and Greece was in danger of defaulting on them, so that is when the rescue package, using the ECB , was arranged.

The ECB money loaned to Greece was used to fund the Interest and Capital repayments on these Bonds.

The Banks should have been left to take the hit, it was their commercial decision to purchase them.

Have we got that time sw? and where will we get the cranes from? I know the new ones at Liverpool where made in China and shipped over on specially built/modified ships.

I know you are always polite sw and I hope you did not think I was being impolite, and you may be right that I don't understand how Sovereign Finances work, but hey! that goes for bankers as well nes pas?

My point mainly was that it wasn't just Germany who had it's fingers in the pie. If the Greek banks had been left to take the hit as you say, would not the situation have gravely worse as in our own bailing out of our banks which has cost this country something like £1 Trillion.

Hi

Same place as everyone else, either a single builder in China or South Korea.

The new ones for the 20,000 unit Container Ships are a very specialised build.

Bristol will be the only port on the West Coast capable of handling these new mega ships.

The existing lock at Avonmouth is only 210m long, the new ships are twice that length.

I am no expert on this, one of my sons Uni friends is and I have listened to their conversations on this.

Hi

After the Financial Crash, which as you say has cost us a mint, the EU, and others, changed the system to prevent Governments having to bail out the Banks again.

Germany should have, under this agreement, let it's Banks take the hit, they did not and used EU Central Bank Funds to protect them.

Greek Pensioners have taken the hit, not German ones.

I must declare a personal interest here.

I absolutely loathe Juncker.

Recently he was asked why he had taken no action against France for breaking EU Rules on Finances., specifically Budget Deficits.

His reply was because it is France.

To balance the equation, I also loathe Theresa May.

They are both Control Freaks.

In all sincerity sw, I wish Bristol the best of luck in bringing job's and prosperity to the area, and as an Engineer I also wish I was involved.

Just going off the subject a little though, how will these ships cope with the massive tides of the Bristol channel?

Probably not a question for this forum though, hope there is a documentary on it.

Hi

You have raised a very valid point itsme.

Even with dredging and a huge new lock, arrival and departure will be time critical.

It will be a commercial decision by the Foreign Shipping Companies, over which we have no Control whatsoever, as to their use of the facility.

We, as Taxpayers, will end up subsidising them.

As an Engineer, you will know there is a solution, it is the economics of the solution which matter.

My expertise lies in other areas and in that area, as others, the Bean Counters have the final say.

Hi

I know all about Felixstowe, it is the one Port we have which can currently accommodate them.
