'Economists for Brexit' back campaign to leave EU

A group of eight influential economists have thrown their support behind the Leave campaign in the UK's referendum on EU membership.

The group, Economists for Brexit, claim the UK economy would be boosted by 4% outside the EU.

But the Britain Stronger In Europe campaign said their economic model would be "the worst possible alternative".

It was the first time a group of economists have publicly backed Brexit.

The economic arguments have so far been tilted towards the Remain camp, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) both warning against leaving.

The report's authors include Patrick Minford, a former adviser to Margaret Thatcher, and Gerard Lyons, a former chief economist at Standard Chartered and now an adviser to the London Mayor, Boris Johnson, who is campaigning for Britain to leave the EU.

Prof Minford, professor of applied economics at Cardiff University, said: "Our analysis shows that walking away from the EU, not negotiating a new agreement with the EU while getting rid of EU trade barriers will bring about a 4% of GDP gain to the economy, consumer prices will fall about 8%, and our hugely competitive services sector will take the place of diminishing manufacturing output."
No need for trade deal

He argued that the UK would not need a new trade agreement if it left the EU because 70% of exports were traded outside the bloc under WTO rules.

"The remaining 30% would also become subject to WTO rules and would be sold to the EU subject to its general tariffs which average around 4%, in the same way as exports from Japan or the US," Prof Minford said.

The group, which also includes Roger Bootle, founder of Capital Economics, said that leaving the EU could cut unemployment by 75,000.

Dr Lyons said that staying in Europe would increase risks for financial services and the City of London.

A spokesperson for Britain Stronger In Europe said: "Treasury analysis shows that trading under WTO rules would be the worst possible alternative to EU membership, seeing households £5,200 worse off and a public spending black hole of £45bn.

"The Treasury also says this model will see the sharpest price rises, as new tariffs on goods, including 10 per cent on cars and 36.1 per cent on dairy products, would be imposed."

We definitely do need more of this. Every time I go online and the Google news page comes up (there is a good mix of news sources) I am bombarded with negative reports, mainly by economists warning me of the impending Armageddon should we vote to leave the EU. What the hell are the Brexit campaigners doing? Get yer finger out lads! I thought that this was going to be a fair fight, I should have known better!

It can never be a fair contest whilst our own PM is trying to influence our vote, along with the usual suspects like the far left BBC.

If the BBC is so far left, why has it ignored several mass protests against the austerity policy of this government?

You said it.

If this were to be a fair referendum, neither the government nor the national broadcasting organisation would support either side, and support for both camps would be evenly provided.

I do think that Cameron's scare tactics, especially wheeling out Obama, might just backfire on him. Most people aren't stupid and can see a con-merchant a mile off.

Don't matter who wins, vote with your gut, then if it goes against you, and goes tits up, you can exonerate yourself from the Fall Out, when it is said "We are all in it together".

Re: 'Economists for Brexit' back campaign to leave EU

Does anyone watch the BBC news apart from me these days? It would appear not since the traditional myth of a 'left wing BBC' still abounds. Since Attilla the Hen parachuted Burt in to 'reform' it, the poor old BEEB has been manipulated, censored and reduced to a poor shadow of it's former wholly independent self and is increasingly being forced to become a unacknowledged mouthpiece of the Tory party. The upcoming review will, no doubt, see it become official. Anyone who actually watches the news would know that.

I presume this assumption is from the same source as your claim in another thread that the Press are all Conservative supporters, or that the economists mentioned earlier in the thread were all Tories with their snouts in the ITIT trough. what is ITIT by the way, it sounds rude.

Perhaps its because labour are taking a bit of a beating this week and you're trying to divert attention away from them. However if you look over the last few weeks it been the Conservatives getting the stick about Europe even though Labour support the same objective.

If you want your arguments to be taken seriously, then you really need to stick to the facts.
