The "fuss" was that they virtually invented popular music. People thought it was a hell of a relief from those desperate old crooners like Matt Monro and plastic rock 'n' rollers such as Bobby Vee.
Same as we needed punk in 1976. Otherwise we'd still be listening to The Carpenters and Charles Aznavour

A bloke I worked with was convinced that the Beatles would disappear and that the Searchers would be the really big thing.Other than that he was quite sane.

I believe that The Searchers were the first to use that Rickenbacker guitar on songs such as "When You Walk In The Room". Well before George Harrison and even The Byrds' Roger McGuinn who most thought invented that jangly sound.
Otherwise, The Searchers were always a bit social club-ish.

oh.he wasn't quite as balmy as I thought then.
