Statins

I believe we had a thread about this not long ago, but on the radio today they were saying that soon, all men over the age of 50 and all women over 60 are going to be put on Statins, or at least offered them, regardless of Cholesterol levels, as standard procedure and as a preventative medicine. A man on the radio says it may help stop heart attacks or strokes, but still won't you live any longer!

Would you take them 'just incase?'

I believe there is a programme on Radio 4 about it tonight at 8pm if anyone's interested.

Re: Statins

Hello Patsy, I too, would try every other way to lower cholesterol before resorting to statins. Trouble is, I think there are still people who don't query anything, or ask questions, they just think it must be right because the doctor said so.

Re: Statins

That's true - I have had the test done since starting the Sterols and the result was the same as a statin result, without the side effects ......

Re: Statins

I'm not a big believer in taking anything I don't need these days, I already have enough medications to start my own pharmacy. I don't think enough has been done to discover why some people have problems on them either, just dismissing it doesn't make me feel any happier about taking them.

Re: Statins

I have no intention of taking a statin unless I really feel I have to. I'm deeply suspicious of this plan as being profit related more than health related.

Re: Statins

They forget to mention the side effects, my quack put me on Statins, forget what my level was about 5.2 I think. However the rotten things upset my digestion and gave me aches in the leg muscles. Soon binned them

Possible side effects are on the information leaflet Curmudgeon.

Instead of just 'binning' your medication, if you had gone back to your GP and reported the side effects you were experiencing, you would have been prescribed an alternative.
Statins like all medications have alternative types, many medicines i.e antibiotics dont suit everyone and an alternative can be prescribed.
