A pity that some religions don't practice tolerance to those who don't believe as they do or punish and sometimes murder those of a different sexual orientation.

Islam will tolerate some other religions, but on Qur'anic terms only.

But just look at the word tolerate.

Not treat as equal, but tolerate.

Likewise the the quote from The Cow --- "There is no compunction in religion"

Very true, you either fit into the category of being "People of the Book", in which case submit, obey and live shar'ia, and pay an enhanced compulsory tax, or convert of die.

It means that we can't actually MAKE someone abandon their religion but they don't -----

No, but there have been some nasty atheists who have been tyrants - Mao, Stalin, Hitler come to mind.

No doubt plenty more who have claimed to be "religious" but actually only for political reasons.

It tends to be cultural intolerance again back to religions mixing with governments. Ideally we should have secular governments who tolerate all religions then we wouldn't have so much trouble. Extremists also aren't very tolerant in any religion or form of atheism, extreme left or right wing politics too can be very intolerant.

Was USSR a religious state ? they never appeared too peaceful to me. Many communist states aren't friendliest places to live and quite enjoy trying to move into their neighbours lands.

How can a secular government survive that supports all religions when Islam will only tolerate (that word again) only certain other religions.

The proposition is paradox.

As for atheists, all those that I know, and one way or another that's a fair number, have two views on theists.

The first is based on sadness that so many deluded people are under the control of nothing more than a meme,

The second is that elimination of theism should be taking the highest priority especially where children and young people are concerned.

How many wars did the USSR actually start? When it comes to starting wars the prize goes to the good 'ol USA.

Similarly invasions. The invasion record of the USSR is mostly in the early part of the 20th century and involved neighbouring countries that had a terrible record where workers conditions were involved.

Arguably the state philosophy of so-called communist states like China and the USSR, WAS, in effect a religion. In place of a celestial God, there was a party leader - Stalin, Mao or Pol Pot - whose word was holy writ and could not be challenged. Just think back to the mindless hordes of Red Guards waving Mao's Little Red Book and chanting about the universal truth of 'Marxism-Leninism Mao-Tse-Tung Thought.'
