Cleaning a vitreous enamel bath

We had to clean a viterous enamel bath in an old cottage, we had tried lots of cleaning products without much luck.
Finally someone suggested one third 5% hydrogen peroxide solution and two thirds bicarbonate of soda. Mix it together and spread it on the bath, then leave it for an hour. The results are amazing when you wash it off.

The safe level of Hydrogen peroxide is a 3% solution, we use it in industry any higher percentage you are risking your health, so be careful doing this.

Perhaps I should have used gloves Julie. When I read the bottle it says 200ml Hydrogen Peroxide Solution 6% 20 vols for external use only. I got it from the pharmacy and it is made by Care + . The pharmacist said he sold it to ladies who wanted to bleach their hair.
What do you think about that.

I think it's a bit strong to put with bicarb, it's not gloves but breathing apparatus you may need

Julie,
what gas do you think this mixture is going to give off? Could you be confusing this with bleach. Hydrogen peroxide is H2O2 and bicarbonate of soda is NaHCO3. It did not give of any gas at all but perhaps hydrogen peroxide could be a bit agressive on your skin, I did not notice anything when I cleaned the bath and ladies use it to bleach their hair.

I am no chemist but I do know what we are allowed to safely mix and what we would be sacked for even thinking about. I have been in the cleaning industry long enough to remember before safety was deemed paramount and remember the problems people went on to suffer.

The problem I have with this is that it was my chemist who suggested it and if you Google cleaning a vitreous enamel bath you will find this method described in detail.

Well I am only going by our health and safety rules at work so you take your chance and take whichever ideas you wish to follow.
