Enviroment problems in New Zealand??

It was with surprise and sadness that l read tonight that the Hauraki
Gulf Marine Park was facing an existential threat from human
exploitation in just ten years of setting the park up?
It seems the authorities allowed both commercial and recreational
fishermen to harvest whatever they wanted and by whatever means
they wanted?
This has led to almost complete extinction of crayfish, which were
abundant ten years ago, and reduced afish called the red snapper
to fall to 20% of its former numbers!
This has in turn caused the growth of the sea urchins which the
red snapper and crayfish lived on! this in turn has allowed the
sea urchins to over eat the kelp and other vegetation resulting in
less fish species that lived on the vegetation!
The knock on effect this is less bird life which ten years ago were
also super abundant!
Humans are also impacting on the marine enviroment by building
settlements around the coasts with all the problems that brings
such as sewage and interference with estuaries etc!
I find this so sad as l have long looked on New Zealand as a
paragon where NZ is concerned??
I would like to hear the views of our NZ members on this matter?
